How to care for a baby who spits up milk

1. Keep the upper body elevated. Once vomit enters the trachea, it can lead to choking. Therefore, when laying the child down, it is best to place a towel under the child's body and keep the upper body elevated. If the child vomits while lying down, we can turn the child's face to one side. 2. After vomiting, pay close attention to the child's condition. When the child is lying down, elevate the child's head, or simply hold the child upright. After vomiting, the child's complexion may not look good, but as long as they can recover shortly after, there is no problem. Additionally, depending on the situation, you can appropriately give the child some fluids. 3. Fluid replenishment should be done 3 after vomiting.

  1. Keep the upper body elevated.

Once vomit enters the trachea, it can lead to choking. Therefore, when letting the child lie down, it is best to place a towel under the child's body and keep the upper body elevated. If the child vomits while lying down, we can turn the child's face to one side.

  2. After vomiting, pay more attention to the child's condition.

When the child is lying down, elevate the child's head, or simply hold the child upright. After vomiting, the child's complexion may not look good, but as long as they can recover shortly after, there is no problem. Additionally, depending on the situation, you can appropriately give the child some fluids.

  3. Replenish fluids 30 minutes after vomiting.

If you give the child fluids immediately after vomiting, it may cause them to vomit again. Therefore, it is best to try giving the child a little bit of plain water with a spoon about 30 minutes after vomiting.

  4. After vomiting, reduce the amount of milk given to half of the usual amount.

When the baby has recovered and wants to drink milk again, we can give them some milk. However, the amount of milk should be reduced to about half of the usual amount, although the number of feedings can be increased. During the period of continuous vomiting, we can only give the baby milk and not other foods, including complementary foods.

How to prevent vomiting?

 1. Choose a nipple of appropriate size.

If the nipple hole is too small, the child has to suck harder, which can lead to air and milk being sucked in together, easily causing vomiting; but if the nipple hole is too large, the child may choke while sucking, leading to severe coughing. Therefore, when choosing a nipple, we need to consider whether the size of the nipple hole is suitable for our child.

  2. Be careful not to let the baby eat too quickly. If the milk is too full and sprays out, it will make the child uncomfortable.

  3. Pay attention to burping during and after feeding.

After the child is 3-4 months old, they can not only master the sucking technique well, but the function of the lower esophageal sphincter has also matured, so the frequency of vomiting will significantly decrease. However, before this age, it is best to help the child burp after each feeding.

  4. After feeding, it is best to keep the baby upright for 20 to 30 minutes, and don't rush to distract the baby with play.
