October 10th every year isWorld Mental Health Day, also known as World Mental Health Day, initiated by the World Psychiatric Association in 1992, aims to raise public awareness of mental health issues, promote more open discussions about mental illness, and encourage investment in the prevention and treatment of mental disorders.

This year marks the 31st 'World Mental Health Day', with the theme 'Mental Health, Social Harmony'(Make Mental Health & Well-Being for all a Global Priority). The current reality of society has led to a sharp increase in various psychological stressors, severely affecting individual mental health. At the same time, mental health issues have become significant public health problems and prominent social issues. Mental illnesses not only severely impact the work and lives of patients and their families but also bring heavy social and economic burdens.
Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, summarized mental health as the ability to love and work. This means being able to love oneself, love family, love society, and have the ability to learn and work.
In fact, mental health is as important as physical health. With increasing life pressures, people encounter varying degrees of difficulties and setbacks, leading to corresponding unpleasant emotions, unhappiness, and behavioral issues such as irritability and impatience. These can all be categorized as psychological issues, which can also be understood as a psychological cold. Just like treating a physical cold, we need to pay attention to, focus on, and resolve psychological issues to quickly return to a normal mental state.
However, in life, we often find that some people misunderstand psychological issues. There are two situations: one is to interpret psychological issues as thought problems, leading to ideological education or persuasion; the other is to equate psychological issues with mental disorders, believing that seeing a psychologist or psychiatrist means having a mental illness, which creates a stigma and reluctance to seek treatment. These approaches can delay the condition, turning minor psychological issues into troublesome psychological disorders or mental illnesses, which in turn affect individual life functions and social functions. For example, students may refuse to go to school due to unsatisfactory exam results, leading to school aversion; adults may experience sleep problems due to excessive stress, resulting in absenteeism, job changes, or resignations. These all impact personal social functions and family stability, adversely affecting social stability and development. Therefore, we hope everyone pays attention to mental health, builds a harmonious society, and wishes that each of us possesses the 'ability to love and work.'
Mental illness refers to diseases characterized by varying degrees of impairment in cognitive, emotional, volitional, and behavioral activities due to dysfunction of brain functions influenced by various biological, psychological, and social environmental factors. It is mainly divided into mild and severe mental illnesses. Mild mental illnesses include anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, and phobias; severe mental illnesses include schizophrenia, paranoid disorders, affective psychosis, and psychosomatic disorders.
It is important to clarify that the mental illnesses we refer to are abnormal psychological issues, while in real life, the psychological issues of ordinary people are considered normal psychological issues, which fall within the scope of work for psychological counselors. Normal psychological issues can be further divided into: general psychological issues, serious psychological issues, and neurotic psychological issues (such as depressive states that have not yet developed into depression).
Psychological issues can be addressed through psychotherapy or medication, and it is also important to actively engage in self-adjustment in daily life.
(1) Psychological counseling and therapy:
If psychological issues arise, it is necessary to seek help from experienced psychologists at reputable hospitals. By psychologically experiencing past setbacks, one can express their emotions, recognize and overcome psychological issues, and understand the root of internal conflicts. After self-reflection, one can rationally and emotionally accept the psychological issues.
(2) Medication treatment:
If psychological issues affect mental or physical health, medications such as antidepressants and anxiolytics can be used under a doctor's guidance to alleviate emotional discomfort. It is essential to strictly follow medical advice during medication and not to stop taking medication without permission, as this may lead to withdrawal reactions and adverse effects. Regular follow-up visits are also important.
(3) Self-adjustment:
Learn scientific methods to cope with emotions, such as mindfulness and meditation, to enhance self-emotional management skills; write down worries in the form of a diary and seek coping strategies after emotions have calmed down; seek emotional support by communicating with family and friends who have good listening skills; read psychology books and participate in psychology salon activities to help us overcome or accept certain issues.
Finally, I remind everyone not to neglect the study of mental health in daily life. We are not saints or deities; everyone will encounter mental health challenges to varying degrees on their growth journey.
This issue of popular science aims to encourage everyone to face the issue of mental health, so that in everyday life, we can master methods of psychological adjustment and maintain a good mindset.
