Don't worry about baby jaundice! Daytime phototherapy allows mother and baby to stay together!

The term that we parents usually refer to as giving children 'blue light' should be called: neonatal phototherapy in medical terminology. It is a treatment for neonatal jaundice that uses light to illuminate the skin, reducing the bilirubin levels in the serum and preventing unconjugated bilirubin from crossing the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier and entering the brain, which can cause bilirubin encephalopathy. It is one of the important measures for treating pathological jaundice in newborns, being simple, safe, and effective.

What we parents usually refer to as giving the child 'blue light' should be called: neonatal phototherapy in medical terms. It treats neonatal jaundice by illuminating the skin, reducing bilirubin in the serum, and preventing unconjugated bilirubin from crossing the blood-brain barrier, which can cause bilirubin encephalopathy. It is one of the important measures for treating pathological jaundice in newborns, simple and easy to perform, and safe and effective.

Parents need to pay attention to the fact that neonatal jaundice hasphysiologicalandpathologicaldistinctions, and differentiating between the two types of jaundice is very important for the diagnosis and treatment of neonatal jaundice.

Characteristics of physiological jaundice

Most neonatal jaundice is classified as 'physiological jaundice', which will subside within 1 to 2 weeks. Many babies may have jaundice for up to one and a half months, and for breastfed babies, jaundice may even last more than 2 months. However, if bilirubin rises sharply and enters brain cells, causing 'kernicterus', it can cause serious harm to the baby.

The order of jaundice increase is that the baby turns yellow from the face → trunk → limbs and eyes.
The order of jaundice reduction is that the baby turns yellow from the limbs and eyes → trunk → face.

If you find it difficult to determine whether your baby's jaundice has subsided, you can go to the hospital to check the bilirubin level every 2 to 5 days.
There is also a small number of babies who have 'pathological jaundice', which should be taken seriously.

Characteristics of pathological jaundice

It appears within 24 hours after birth, with more severe jaundice symptoms, possibly accompanied by vomiting, fever, convulsions, drowsiness, pale stools, etc., and progresses quickly with a long duration. Jaundice may fade and reappear, or worsen progressively.

Bilirubin can cross the blood-brain barrier, damaging the nervous system, causing bilirubin encephalopathy (kernicterus), leading to severe consequences such as intellectual disabilities, hearing impairments, and cerebral palsy.
