Labor pain is the most intense pain that the vast majority of women experience in their lifetime, second only to burning pain. With the rapid development of comfortable medical care, it is now possible to control labor pain with analgesia when the pain is excruciating, ensuring the physical and mental health of both the mother and the fetus.

If labor brings joy of new life to mothers, then painless delivery undoubtedly offers mothers a safer and more dignified choice.

Let's learn about painless delivery.

Painless delivery, medically known as 'labor analgesia', involves placing a tube in a narrow epidural space behind the waist and continuously injecting anesthetic into the tube to block pain during labor. This procedure is usually performed by anesthesiologists.

The amount of anesthetic used in painless delivery is very small, with a very low concentration, and it can be quickly metabolized out of the body, so it has little impact on both the mother and breastfeeding.

Can all mothers use painless delivery?

Although painless delivery has great advantages and is suitable for the vast majority of mothers, there are still a few who cannot use it.

1. Those who cannot undergo vaginal delivery (natural birth) as assessed by obstetrics: abnormal birth canal, macrosomia (disproportionate head and pelvis), etc.

2. Those with contraindications for epidural anesthesia cannot use it: spinal deformities, severe lumbar spine injuries or surgical history, serious intrathecal issues, and significant infections in the lumbar region, etc.

3. Some systemic issues: coagulation disorders such as severe thrombocytopenia; severe infections or shock, etc.

Whether a mother is suitable for painless delivery should be assessed by obstetricians and anesthesiologists.

Will painless delivery have adverse effects on the fetus?

Epidural anesthesia is a very mature technology, widely used in surgical anesthesia such as cesarean sections, and the dosage and concentration of anesthetic used are lower compared to cesarean sections. The anesthetic must first be absorbed by the mother and then enter the fetus through the placenta, at which point the dosage is minimal. Moreover, the baby can metabolize it independently, so there is no need to worry too much about adverse effects on the fetus. Additionally, small doses of anesthetics have no side effects on the human body.

Will painless delivery affect breastfeeding?

The medication used in epidural labor analgesia acts locally, and the amount that enters the mother's bloodstream and is secreted in breast milk is negligible. The body completely metabolizes it within 2 hours, so it will not have any impact on the baby.

Can painless delivery achieve complete painlessness?

The analgesic effect varies from person to person, and the results are not the same; not all deliveries can achieve complete painlessness.

After using labor analgesia, the pain level of the mother can usually be controlled to below 3-4 points, and some may even reach 0 points.

Most mothers, after using labor analgesia, will only feel tightness in the abdomen during contractions, without significant pain.

Every mother is great. In the journey of childbirth, some pain need not be borne alone. Alleviating the pain of childbirth, rejecting the desire to avoid 'giving birth', may every pregnant mother be treated gently by the world and smoothly welcome new life!
