When it comes to sitting the month,
we often think of many rules.
No bathing! No washing hair!
No blowing wind! No opening windows!
No looking at phones! No watching TV!
……
Is it really necessary to suffer so much during the month?
How can one scientifically sit the month?
First, from an objective perspective, it is okay to wash.
During childbirth, whether it is a cesarean or natural delivery, the body inevitably suffers trauma and bleeding, consuming a lot of energy and physical strength, leading to a significant loss of vitality and a state of extreme weakness. If not taken care of, it is indeed easy to be invaded by wind, cold, dampness, and evil. However, in the past, living conditions were poor, and bathing was mostly done in a basin, which easily led to infections. Additionally, rooms had poor ventilation, and with distinct seasons, there was no heating in winter and no air conditioning in summer. Therefore, the advice from the elderly not to bathe or wash hair has some basis. Nowadays, every household has water heaters and air conditioning, doors and windows are well-sealed, and there are facilities like showers. So, there is no need to worry about getting cold; washing hair and bathing during the month is not a problem.
Second, from a medical perspective, one should wash.
Everyone knows that postpartum women often sweat a lot during childbirth, and after delivery, the secretion of oil increases compared to usual, especially in the first week postpartum. The retained water from pregnancy is excreted through the skin, especially noticeable during sleep, leading to excessive sweating upon waking, which is referred to as 'lochia sweat.' This is a normal physiological phenomenon but can easily lead to a dirty and itchy scalp and hair, and may even promote the growth of mites. Additionally, with continuous milk secretion and lochia discharge postpartum, there is often a 'milky' smell emanating from the body, and if hygiene is not maintained, there may also be a 'bloody' odor. If one does not wash their hair or bathe, the sticky sweat and lochia provide a good environment for bacteria to thrive, and once a bacterial infection occurs, it can be detrimental to the health of both mother and baby.
Precautions for washing hair during the month
Having read this, expectant mothers should no longer ask questions like 'Can I wash my hair during the month?' Yes, you can wash your hair during the month. However, there are some precautions to take when washing hair during this time:
1. The water temperature for washing hair should be appropriate, not too cool, ideally kept around 40-45°C, and the temperature difference between inside and outside the bathroom should not be too large to avoid catching a cold.
2. After washing hair, dry it promptly and wrap it with a dry towel to avoid losing a lot of heat when the wet hair is exposed to the air, which can cause the blood vessels in the scalp to suddenly constrict due to cold stimulation, leading to headaches.
3. Generally speaking, postpartum hair tends to be oilier and may fall out more easily, so do not use overly stimulating hair products when washing.
4. When washing hair, it is best to use a wooden comb to avoid generating static electricity that can irritate the scalp.
Additionally, if bathing is done together, one can wash the body first before washing the hair. Therefore, it is recommended that postpartum mothers scientifically 'sit the month,' pay attention to developing good hygiene habits, promote postpartum health, and simultaneously safeguard the health of the baby.
