Pregnant mothers should pay attention! There are specific considerations for oxygen intake during pregnancy, so don't be blind to it!
Oxygen is an essential for sustaining life and is the source of life for people. For pregnant women, oxygen is even more important, as oxygen intake can directly affect the growth and development of the fetus. Many expectant mothers engage in oxygen therapy, so is oxygen intake during pregnancy beneficial for the fetus? Let's explore this together with Xiao Ying!

Oxygen is an essential for sustaining life and is the source of life for people. For pregnant women, oxygen is even more important, as inhaling oxygen directly affects the growth and development of the fetus. Many pregnant mothers will inhale oxygen, so is it good for the fetus during pregnancy? Let's find out together with Sakura~
Life cannot exist without oxygen, just as fish cannot live without water. The fetus in the womb must rely on the mother's blood circulation to obtain sufficient oxygen. If the fetus experiences prolonged hypoxia in the womb, compensatory functions will fail, and all systems in the body will be suppressed, especially the cardiovascular and central nervous systems, which are particularly sensitive to hypoxia and can directly threaten the life of the fetus. This is also a major factor affecting the healthy development of the newborn's nervous system.
To determine whether a pregnant mother needs to inhale oxygen, it is first necessary to accurately assess whether the fetus is truly hypoxic in the womb. Only when oxygen is needed can inhaling oxygen provide the greatest benefit.
In fact, under normal circumstances, pregnant women do not need to inhale oxygen, as the amount of oxygen inhaled daily is sufficient to meet the needs of both themselves and the fetus.
Some pregnant women inhale oxygen due to insufficient oxygen intake, as a treatment method determined by doctors based on specific conditions. Generally speaking, if pregnant women experience the following abnormal situations, they can inhale oxygen to correct it.
What are the signs of fetal hypoxia in the womb?
1. Changes in fetal movement
Fetal movement is a normal physiological activity of the fetus, which can be perceived by the pregnant woman around the 18th to 20th week of pregnancy. The situation of fetal movement varies greatly due to individual characteristics; some fetuses have gentle movements with fewer occurrences, while others have larger movements with more frequent occurrences, all of which are normal. However, if a fetus that usually moves a lot suddenly has reduced movement, or a fetus that usually moves little suddenly becomes very active, and the movements are less than 10 times in 12 hours or more than 40 times in 12 hours, it may indicate fetal hypoxia in the womb.
2. Abnormal fetal heart rate
The normal fetal heart rate is regular and strong, ranging from 120 to 160 beats per minute. If there is an increase in heart rate before a decrease in fetal movement, with a rate exceeding 160 beats per minute, it indicates early fetal hypoxia. If fetal movement decreases or stops, and the heart rate is less than 120 beats per minute, it indicates late fetal hypoxia. If abnormal fetal heart rate is detected, it should be listened to again after 20 minutes to make a judgment. If the heart rate is too fast, it should also be listened to again when there is no fetal movement to ensure the accuracy of the judgment.
3. Growth stagnation
After hypoxia, the growth and development of the fetus will be delayed. The growth of the fetus can be assessed by measuring the height of the uterine fundus. Under normal circumstances, after 28 weeks of pregnancy, it should increase by about 1 centimeter each week. Pregnant women can measure this at home or at the hospital regularly. If there is no growth for two consecutive weeks, further examination is needed to clarify whether the fetus is hypoxic in the womb, so that the cause can be corrected to ensure the fetus grows healthily.
Excessive oxygen inhalation by pregnant women can be harmful.
Although it is correct to provide oxygen inhalation to pregnant women when the fetus is hypoxic, reasonable oxygen inhalation needs to be conducted under the guidance of a doctor, as there are strict requirements for the method, duration, flow rate, and concentration of oxygen inhalation. Oxygen inhalation during pregnancy should not be excessive, as too much oxygen can disrupt the acid-base balance in the baby's blood, making it more alkaline, which can adversely affect the baby's health.
Another viewpoint is that excessive oxygen inhalation can affect the development of the fetal retina, posing a risk of blindness at birth for the newborn. Therefore, it is unnecessary to inhale too much oxygen; following medical advice for appropriate oxygen inhalation is advisable.
In fact, pregnant mothers can maintain a good mood, go outside to breathe fresh air, practice deep breathing to enhance lung capacity, avoid lying flat while sleeping (the left side is best), not sit for long periods, and practice abdominal breathing techniques, which are also effective methods to prevent fetal hypoxia in the womb.
