What to do if the fetal umbilical cord is wrapped around the neck? Here's how mothers should respond!

In fact, the umbilical cord is the only connection between the mother and the baby, and the most common issue that arises is the cord being wrapped around the neck. Once expectant mothers are informed by doctors that the fetus has the cord wrapped around its neck, it is natural to feel panic, fear, and concern for the baby's safety. How could this happen when everything seemed fine? If the cord is indeed wrapped around the neck, what should be done? Let's first understand this together.

Pregnant mothers all know...

The baby is not quiet in the womb,

especially in the second and third trimesters,

doing 360-degree turns, punching and kicking,

sometimes creating a dilemma for themselves:

the umbilical cord wrapped around the neck

This makes many expectant mothers anxious,

Is it a big impact on the fetus?

How to solve it?

In fact, the umbilical cord is the only connection between the mother and the baby, and the most common problem is the umbilical cord wrapped around the neck. Once the expectant mother is informed by the doctor that the fetus is wrapped in the umbilical cord, it is inevitable to feel panic and fear, worrying about the baby's safety. How could it happen that the umbilical cord is wrapped around the neck when everything was fine? If it really happens, what should be done? Let's first understand it together.

Causes of the umbilical cord wrapped around the neck

The umbilical cord wrapped around the neck refers to the umbilical cord wrapping around the fetus's neck. It is a common phenomenon, and during delivery, we often see babies with the cord wrapped around the neck one or two times.
1. Fetal stretching and movement
The fetus in the womb is not obedient; they roll and turn, and in the small womb, the umbilical cord can wrap around the fetus's neck, hands, and feet.
2. Small fetus and excess amniotic fluid leading to a larger activity space

If the umbilical cord is too long and the fetus is too small, it is easier for the cord to wrap around the neck; if there is too much amniotic fluid, the fetus has a larger activity space in the womb, making it easier for the fetus to wrap the cord around itself during movement. Additionally, if the baby is too lively and moves frequently, it can also lead to the umbilical cord wrapping around the neck.

What are the dangers of the umbilical cord wrapped around the neck

Generally: not much impact
Under normal circumstances, the dangers of the umbilical cord wrapped around the neck are not significant because the umbilical cord itself has a certain elasticity and will not harm the baby within a certain range.

Umbilical cord too tight: affects blood and oxygen supply

If the umbilical cord is too tight, the baby's blood supply will be affected. The baby cannot absorb nutrients and oxygen normally, leading to delayed development. Additionally, during delivery, as the uterus contracts and the fetus's head comes out of the mother, it can tighten the umbilical cord further, potentially causing the baby to suffocate.

How to determine if the umbilical cord is wrapped around the neck

1. Ultrasound examination
Color Doppler ultrasound can quickly determine the position of the umbilical cord, visually showing the direction of blood flow and the number of wraps, allowing for rapid and accurate detection of whether the fetus has the umbilical cord wrapped around the neck.
When observing whether the fetus has the umbilical cord wrapped around the neck through ultrasound, it can be judged as follows: a 'V' shaped mark on the fetus's neck indicates one wrap; a 'W' shape indicates two wraps; a 'wave' shape indicates more than two wraps.
2. Fetal heart monitoring
If the fetal movements are abnormal, it is very likely that the umbilical cord is too tight, causing discomfort for the baby. During the process of listening to the fetal heartbeat, abnormal fetal movements may occur.
3. Count fetal movements

Many pregnant women do not intentionally count fetal movements. However, counting fetal movements is a good way to determine whether the fetus is abnormal. Mothers can perceive the baby's activity patterns while counting movements, thus knowing the baby's health status. Whether frequent or reduced fetal movements, both are bad signals for the baby, especially reduced movements, which may be caused by lack of oxygen.

What to do if the umbilical cord is wrapped around the neck

01 Count fetal movements daily

In the second and third trimesters, set aside at least one hour each morning, noon, and evening to pay attention to fetal movements. It is recommended that mothers choose a comfortable position, find a quiet space without disturbances, put down their phones, turn off the TV, and calm down to feel the fetal movements.

Some babies are lively and active, while others are quieter, so fetal movements may be vigorous or gentle rolling, both of which are normal phenomena. There is no need to compare with other pregnant mothers; mothers only need to record their own baby's movements.

02 Drink water

Drinking more water will not increase amniotic fluid, but if pregnant mothers are always dehydrated, drinking less water may indeed lead to insufficient amniotic fluid. When the umbilical cord is wrapped around the baby, we cannot reach in to help move the cord; we can only ensure that the amniotic fluid is sufficient so that the cord is in a floating state, reducing the chances of the baby being compressed. Even if it is wrapped around the neck two times, it will not be too tight.

However, do not drink too much water before bed to avoid affecting the mother's sleep.

Finally, I remind all pregnant mothers that the incidence of the umbilical cord wrapped around the neck is about 25% or more, so there is no need to be nervous.

What to do if the umbilical cord, baby, fetus, fetal movement, and amniotic fluid may appear concerning for the mother.
