A child's health condition affects every member of a large family. Cerebral palsy, developmental delays, brain injuries, abnormal muscle tone, congenital deformities, speech disorders, ADHD, genetic metabolic diseases... For parents, these are indeed distressing terms, and many parents are often uncertain. In children's rehabilitation centers, these abnormalities can be diagnosed relatively early.

A child not speaking has always been a troubling issue for many parents. After a period of training, the child finally spoke, calling out 'dad' and 'mom', or could say 'toy car', 'flower', 'Doraemon', etc. At this moment, parents are very happy because the child who had not been able to articulate can now say complete words. However, after a while, they may find that the little one only keeps repeating these few fixed words, unable to form phrases and sentences, cannot communicate with others, and does not understand many of the parents' instructions.

Some children mechanically mimic the words of others during conversations, like 'parrots repeating words'. These phenomena indicate that the child does not truly understand the meaning, structure, and function of the words. Therefore, what they say is not real 'language', lacks communicative function, and does not serve as a tool. Pronunciation and imitation are just the first steps in speaking. Only by understanding the other person's meaning and knowing how to express it can one truly communicate with others. Here, language comprehension plays a crucial role. So how can we improve a child's language comprehension ability?

How to improve a child's language comprehension ability?

Seize opportunities in daily life to let children practice cognitive understanding.

1 In daily life, we have many opportunities to stimulate children's language motivation, cleverly using various scenarios and events to practice their understanding. For example, letting the child help with chores: starting with the simplest tasks like 'pass me the cloth' or 'close the cabinet door', etc. Be sure to use short sentences and simple phrases, without too much information, otherwise, the child may not be able to respond, which is not conducive to their understanding. Simplify tasks, speak while doing, and guide the child step by step to 'enlightenment'.

Additionally, you must personally assist the child in doing these tasks, helping them understand through the process: what they are holding, what it is used for, how the action is performed... For example, 'give the cloth to mom' includes the nouns 'mom' and 'cloth', and the verb 'give', expressing an action for the child to complete. Experiencing the relationship between language instructions and the task helps them gradually understand.

Skillfully use reinforcers for greater efficiency.

The role of reinforcers is not to entice or bribe, but to strengthen and promote. By cleverly using reinforcers, the child's cognition and understanding can improve significantly. Using reinforcers, on one hand, helps the child produce related sounds, such as 'potato chips', and on the other hand, engages them in conversation: 'What do you want to eat?' If the child can casually respond with 'potato chips', it indicates they understood the question. Then we can slowly guide them to say short sentences like 'I want to eat potato chips'.

Engage all of the child's senses; eating, drinking, and playing can all be used to practice understanding.

3 Children love to eat, drink, and play, and if assisted properly, all these activities can enhance their understanding. The key is for parents to engage with the child hands-on, strengthening understanding through practice. For example, when parents and children play 'rock-paper-scissors', the child may initially not understand and directly mimic the parent's gestures. This is okay; first, establish cooperation so they can enjoy the game.

Then, how do we help the child understand these items? We can find real rocks, scissors, and paper to help the child understand 'the rock is hard, the scissors cannot cut it'; 'the scissors can cut the paper, while the soft paper can wrap around the rock'. This actually integrates the child's senses: visual, auditory, tactile, etc., allowing the child to have a thorough understanding of specific items. This is also why real objects are much stronger than books and cards.

In summary, life is the most colorful and rich classroom. Skillfully using the little details in life can practice children's cognition and understanding, thereby promoting their expression and communication... Parents must pay attention to this.
