The quality of a baby's sleep is related to the healthy development of the brain. Research by experts shows that the duration of sleep in young children is very important for growth. The sleep duration varies by age: from birth to six months is 16 hours, from six months to two years is 14 hours, at two years it is 12 hours, and from three to four years it is about 11 hours. From age four, children generally do not need to nap during the day. Children under one year can nap 2 to 3 times during the day, while those over two years only need one nap in the afternoon. To determine if a child is sleeping well, one can observe their behavior after waking. If the baby wakes up actively, is very happy, energetic, and emotionally stable, then they are likely sleeping well. Otherwise, there may be sleep issues. The reasons for a child's restless sleep are multifaceted and are not necessarily related to illness. For example, excessive pampering by parents, playing too much during the day, or watching too much television can lead to heightened cortical excitement before sleep, making it difficult for the child to fall asleep. Additionally, improper diet, such as overeating or consuming indigestible foods before bed, can directly lead to restless sleep. Common causes that should not be overlooked include constipation in infants, wet diapers, skin itching, or thirst and hunger, which require careful observation by parents. However, many childhood diseases can also directly affect sleep. For instance, infants with rickets often exhibit night terrors, irritability, and restlessness. Children with pinworm infections may experience intense itching around the anus at night, disrupting their sleep, while those with roundworm infections may wake up crying due to abdominal pain caused by intestinal spasms. Furthermore, fever and colds are common reasons for restless sleep. Ensuring sufficient sleep is beneficial for the secretion of growth hormones at night, which is an important driving force for a child's height growth. Therefore, every parent should ensure their child has quality sleep.
