The baby makes sounds in the knee joint during movement, which may be due to these reasons.
Is there a sound when the baby's knee joint moves?
Author:
1. Dislocation
The baby's body functions are not fully developed, and if parents are not careful during daily care, it is very likely to cause dislocation of the baby's joints, etc. Dislocation leads to abnormal sliding of the tendons around the knee joint, causing popping sounds.
2. Meniscus Abnormality
A small number of children have an abnormal shape of the meniscus, with thick edges and a central depression, resembling a ring, which is referred to as a 'disk-shaped meniscus'. In this case, it is easier to experience joint popping sounds. Diagnosis can be confirmed through joint MRI. If it is indeed a 'disk-shaped meniscus', it generally does not affect the child's walking or normal activities, but as they grow older, caution is needed during intense activities like playing soccer, as it can easily injure the meniscus.
3. Ligament Laxity
Infants have shallow knee joint cavities, and the knee joint contains meniscal structures, which are two pieces of cartilage pads that stabilize the joint and cushion pressure. Ligament tissues around the meniscus restrict movement. When the knee joint flexes and extends, the meniscus slides rapidly within the joint to adapt to changes in joint position. Due to the weakness and laxity of the ligaments in infants, the meniscus has a large range of motion, and when it slides to a certain extent on the joint surface of the knee, it causes a 'popping sound'. As the child grows older, the ligaments become thicker, and the structure of the knee joint gradually remodels, leading to the disappearance of these popping sounds.
Therefore, in most cases, if the baby's knee joint makes popping sounds, there is no need to worry.
